Our registered massage therapist, Judy Gerber-van Vliet, has completed her first level of Manual Lymphatic Drainage with the Vodder School.
This technique may be incorporated into a Massage Therapy / Craniosacral Therapy session or as a stand-alone method of treatment.

What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)?

MLD is a very gentle massage technique which encourages the drainage of lymph. Lymph vessels carry waste products away from tissues and back toward the heart. Congestion can build in an area due to an injury or chronic inflammation. It can also be due to a compromised lymphatic system, such as when cancerous lymph nodes have been removed. Currently, we can help with clients who have a healthy lymphatic system.

How can MLD help?

In addition to decreasing pain and increasing relaxation, MLD can treat a variety of conditions, including acute injuries. Injuries have been known to heal more quickly and pain is decreased when MLD is used.

Here are some specific conditions that MLD can help you with:

  • Acute sports injuries
  • Edema related to pregnancy
  • Acute whiplash or other injuries from motor vehicle accidents
  • Breast health
  • Fibromylagia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  • Burns
  • Insomnia
  • Concussions
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Migraines
  • Constipation
  • Lyme Disease

What can you expect in your treatment?

MLD is performed directly on the skin without oil. It is important that any undergarments are loose so that lymph flow is not impeded. Treatments can last 30-60 minutes, depending on the area that is needing treatment. Gentle, rhythmical hand and finger movements are used to encourage areas of swelling and congestion to clear. The technique is very relaxing and most clients will find they will sleep through at least part of the treatment. MLD is also a good complement to Craniosacral Therapy and Myofascial release techniques.
