Each week, we will be featuring one of the great therapists at The Live Well Centre. A little insight into what they do, but maybe more importantly why they do it. First up, is Registered Massage Therapist Katrina Courtney. Read on and discover a little about Katrina, and why her patients love seeing her!
Meet Registered Massage Therapist Katrina Courtney:
Why did you choose to become a Massage Therapist?
I had never known anyone who was an RMT. I had never seen one nor knew anyone who had seen one. I actually got interested in it from my Chinese horoscope suggesting it was a good fit for a Rabbit. The more I researched it, the more I fell in love with the idea. I love teaching people and I love helping people and it ended up being a great fit!
What thrills you the most/gives you the most passion about what you do?
I love when I get a challenging client and we figure out what works and they come back and, after having chronic or long term symptoms, they tell me it made a significant difference in their pain. It is the most rewarding when you make a difference in someone’s life.
What sort of specialties or techniques do you use that set you apart?
I like to go slow but deep and let the tissue relax at it’s own pace. People find it effective but still leave relaxed. I also use suction cups to loosen adhesions, increase blood flow and relax areas with excessive tension to make my work more effective.
What are your goals/vision for your clients/patients that see you?
My goal for each client varies. Some clients have acute issues and some chronic. Some clients want to prevent issues and some need regular maintenance treatments to stay healthy. Overall we want to see a change. Even small changes make a huge difference overall.
What is the best part of working at The LiveWell Centre?
I love the team atmosphere. Everyone knows what everyone else does so it’s easy to refer out and be confident your referring your client to someone you trust and you are confident in their skills.
What challenges do you see in your clients/patients, and what are some of the ways that you can help them with those challenges?
I see a lot of clients with anxiety and stress. People like that come in and feel great afterwards but by the time they come in again, you have to start at the beginning again. It can be frustrating. Things like meditation, yoga, exercise, and deep breathing can all help you manage your stress between treatments.
Favorite thing to do in your free-time:
I love to read. I always have my tablet with me so that I can read. I love being outside and biking, walking or watching the kids play. I have also recently started a new hobby making Reborn Dolls.
Any previous accomplishment, work or play related, that you are most proud of:
I went through school as a single mother of two young kids. I started in a class of 11 and ended as one of only 3 graduating students. I am pretty proud of that.
Favorite movie or book, and why:
I love so many books it is hard to pick a favourite. I have read the entire Harry Potter series about 8 times though! Maybe that counts!
Anything else that we should know about you, professionally or not? ie. any special talents or expertise outside of work? Any crazy stories?
I recently decided that we would pack up our whole lives and do something I have dreamed of for 7 years. Move to alberta. That is a crazy and hard decision. I am going to drive across the country with 2 kids, a dog, a cat, a rabbit and a lizard. It will be a great and stressful adventure but sometimes you have to go with your gut and live for yourself.
