I absolutely LOVE going to the market! I love talking to all of the farmers and buying fresh local produce right from the source. I never mind that it takes me twice as long to shop because I keep running into people that I have not seen in years.
I find fall to be the best time to go to the market, the stands are sagging under the weight of the bounty that the farmers have grown. Of course there are a ton of veggies and fruits to fill your bags, but did you know that many farmers have meat for sale? Start talking to them! Many have pork, beef, and chicken for order. This is a much healthier way to buy your protein!
Most of these animals, although not always certified organic, live a good life outside getting fresh air, sunlight, grazing and foraging for what nature intended them to eat. The nutrient value in this type of meat far out values what you can get at the grocery store.
AND YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT
One of my favourite things to eat at this time of year with my meat is a roasted roots salad…
even my kids love this!!
Give it a try and let me know what you think:
1 head Garlic
2 Sweet Potatoes
1 Celery Root
3 Tbs Olive Oil
1/2 Tsp each Sea – Salt and Pepper
Trim the tip off of the Garlic then peel and cut up the Veggies. Make sure that they are all about the same size so that they call cook at the same rate. Mix garlic and veggies with oil, salt, and pepper. Spread on greased baking sheet and roast at 425 for about 45 minutes until golden brown.
1/4 Cup chopped fresh mint (or 1 tsp dried)
2 Tbs Olive Oil
2 Tbs Balsamic Vinegar
1/4 Tsp Sea Salt
Squeeze garlic pulp into a large bowl. Add mint, oil, vinegar, and salt. Mash together. Then mix with vegitables.
Feel free to experiment with other veggies. Serve warm and enjoy!
