Chiropractic and Sport Performance
What can chiropractic do for sports? Quite simply, help you move well, which will increase your potential performance with more efficient mechanics, as well as decrease the risk of injury due to a bad movement pattern or compensation.
In chiropractic, we look for areas that are not moving or positioned properly. Any area that isn’t aligned the way it should be, will increase the stress and force through that area. Muscles above, below and beside that area will work harder to compensate and correct for that. This eventually will lead to breakdown and an injury. If a joint is having a particular hard time moving through it’s normal range of motion, or even locked in position, severe stress and adaptation to the muscles occur as they try and overcome the increased resistance.
Pain or not, it is important to be moving well
This may or may not be associated with pain initially, but eventually there will be a breakdown and injury, most often producing pain.
The goal than is to correct for those areas that are either locked or mis-aligned. The most simplest method is with a specific chiropractic adjustment.
But the work does not stop there. Just like when correcting a bad habit or learning a new skill, we have to re-introduce proper function and movement to the system with repetition, so that the correct movement and position hold.
Reset Reload Retrain Repeat
Think of your body as a complex computer, and we are taking out bad and maligned software, and replacing it with the latest and greatest upgraded version. Except with our bodies, bad movement patterns can be engrained and therefore take a while to retrain. The biggest idea is to re-introduce a proper dose of stimulation to help the mechanics last without over-training it. Usually just a few minutes of simple body-weight exercises is all we need to re-establish the right pattern, and repeat that a couple times a day to make the new habit last.
As a chiropractor, our goal is to help you be as healthy as you can possibly be. This means work from our end to help you move well and be in the right positions as well as teach and show you the best ways to keep it that way.
